We’re delighted to see DesignYard’s own Stephanie Hess was commissioned to create the upcoming Lord Mayors’s Award.
The Lord Mayor’s Awards honour individuals and groups who have made a special contribution to both Dublin and its citizens. This year – in the face of the Covid-19 epidemic – the Lord Mayor decided to present one award a month. Nurse Trish Donegan is the first recipient of Stephanie Hess’ Acrobatic Hares award.
“I feel enormously honoured to have been commissioned to create this year’s Lord Mayor’s Awards, which will celebrate the frontline workers of this pandemic who have made a real difference in the lives of their fellow citizens.” – Stephanie Hess.
My Acrobat Series consists of hares engaged in various scenarios that express a mood or tell a story in a playful way. The idea behind this award was to portray the balancing act achieved by our frontline workers in a joyful way, using my acrobatic hares to show their incredible strength and ability to support and juggle so much.
I make each one individually in wax, assemble them in their story, and from there they begin their many-stepped journey through the foundry to emerge on the other side as a bronze sculpture. There are no moulds involved, so every hare is a true original with its own unique character.

“It has been a true privilege to have had the opportunity to create a special piece that honours and celebrates the amazing people that have gone above and beyond in this most extraordinary year.”
