Carnelian (a.k.a. Cornelian) is the red variety of chalcedony, a very fine-grained or cryptocrystalline variety of quartz.
Chalcedony comes in a range of colours — from bluish white, gray, yellow, to earthy reds and browns. Carnelian is the variety of chalcedony that is coloured by impurities of iron oxide. The colour can vary greatly, ranging from pale orange to an intense, almost-black coloration.
Throughout the ages chalcedony has been popular as a material for carving and engraving, making beads and detailed intaglios that have stood the test of time. The oldest examples of beads are carved beads from the Early Neolithic found in Bulgaria. It was popular material in Ancient Roman times for seals and intaglios, as wax doesn’t stick to the gem. Carnelian remains a favoured material for carvings with contemporary stone cutters today.
Carnelian is known as the birthstone for zodiac sign Virgo (Aug. 23 – Sept. 22). It symbolizes bold energy, courage, and motivation, balancing energy levels and stimulating muscles. It is thought to boost confidence and creativity, while enhancing intelligence and memory. And is further believed to attract prosperity and good luck.
At DesignYard we have makers that use a range of carnelian brands and carvings in spectacular colours. We love the rich reds and oranges as they are the perfect pop of colour for your summer wardrobe.
